From the Music Director

Half Notes and Whole Rests

Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives.

Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom He gives. Colossians 3:16

One Sunday night when Brother Steve was gone I had the opportunity to teach out of John 13. The main point I wanted to get across was this: you can serve without loving, but you cannot love without serving. In John 13:15, after Jesus had washed His disciples’ feet, He told them, “I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.” He had shown them that love is an action verb: you can’t love without serving because serving helps to define love. And even more pointedly, He taught them that how they showed love for each other would be the evidence for the world: “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are My disciples” (John 13:35 NLT).

If the world were to poke its head in and watch us (and don’t think they’re not!) would they find the proof that we are His disciples? Does the message about Jesus fill our lives, or does it just fill our Sunday mornings?  Do you serve out of love or obligation? Obligation will let you serve without love, but love – His love – will not let you keep it to yourself. It’s like manna – you can’t store it up. You have to give it away.

For the first time in nearly forty years, I am going back to camp. I was saved at a church camp forty years ago, but never went back after high school. Now that I am done with school, I have the opportunity to go to Kids 4 Christ camp, so I’m taking it. For a week, I won’t have to act my age. I’m looking forward to it, and to interacting with your children in a way I don’t usually get to. The other time I get to do that is also happening in June: VBS, June 24-28. It’s going to be a lot of fun and we hope to do some things we don’t usually get to do. Amazing Wonders Aviation, discovering God’s awesome power! Your kids will be humming, singing, and doing the hand-motions to the songs long after VBS is over and so will I! Don’t tell them, but they’re learning God’s truths and Scriptures while having such a good time. Like in the animated movie, Up, “Adventure is out there!”

June is shaping up to an exciting month at FirstBaptistChurch, and I hope you’ll get involved rather than watching from the sidelines. Paul didn’t tell the church at Colossae, “Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill the lives of others while you watch from the sidelines.” He urged them to let it fill their lives, to give them meaning and hope. Paul knew the Holy Spirit would fill them to overflowing. You can’t love without serving. Let Him fill you up this month, and see where it takes you. “Adventure is out there!”
